The Longest Ride pages 16-52

I have been introduced to the four main characters this book. In the first chapter, I met Ira and the spirit of his beloved wife Ruth. Now I am getting to know Sophia and Luke. Sophia is a senior at Wake Forest University who has just ended a long-term relationship. On the advice of her roommate Marcia, she has agreed to attend a redo in a near by town. After an altercation with Brain, her former flame, a mysterious “cowboy” comes to her rescue.

Both the Sophia and Luke characters seem like loners who need companionship. They exchange family histories and l am interested to see where their budding romance goes. At this point though, they are nothing more than casual acquaintances. It would be nice to know how the character of Ira is going to interact with the two younger characters. I find the plot of this book a little that I hired to understand at times but I'm going to keep going. Hopefully the face of it will pick up soon so I don't have to put so much time in between blog posts. I was going to talk in detail about what was going on in these chapters but then I thought that it would give too much away if any of you decided to read this book.

One of the things I really admire about this book is the level of description involved, especially when it comes to setting. Even though I have no clue where Wake Forest University is and have never been to North Carolina, Sparks always has the uncanny ability to put me right there, metaphorically speaking of course. His characters sometime become almost real to me. However, I haven't felt that way since the days of Alley and Noah in The Notebook or Landon and Jamie in a walk to remember. That might be why they are two of my very favorite movies of all time.

As an aspiring writer I am quickly coming down with a case of "description envy”! I can't wait to read the rest and give you all my impressions of it.

Celebrity Name Game

When mom met me up this morning, she was asking me which celebrity was my favorite, you know favorite female actress or male actor. It reminds me of a one, of one of those  party games that are meant to catch you offguard guard. She asked me a bunch of other questions, I answered accordingly. At the end of the game and after I was done using the toilet and eating breakfast… I wished that I would have been able to come up with better responses.  I think I said Jim Carrey and Julia Roberts. Looking back however, I would have changed my answers. Jim Carrey would have been a contender but Matthew McConaughey would have knocked him off of the top spot. As far as favorite actresses go, and still would have been Katherine Hagel, even though her career has been put on hold because of her desire to have a family. Mom then switched to questions that were of a more personal nature. That game reminding me of something I saw on one of my all-time favorite TV shows, Charmed. I think the s...

The End of The Bucket List

Noah finally reached #99 today. The reporter and photographer from the local paper had just left, when I arrived. “ The basket hit the ground safely, I see.”             “Yes,” he replied. “As you predicted, it would have been more fun with my Emilee. All the couple I went with wanted to do was swill red or white, and talk of his promotion. Emilee would have squeezed my hand lovingly and talked about the beauty of the countryside.”             “Well, Noah…They all can not be your Emilee. She was one of a kind. What’s next? I was there at the beginning when you had me write the blasted list.”             He was sitting on the edge of the bed when he looked over at me. Tears rolling down his wrinkled cheeks. “Ah, my boy, I wish I had more time on the clock, more things to tick off.     ...

The Longest Ride pages 1 through 12

I have recently started reading Nicholas Sparks’ latest novel The Longest Ride. As far as I can tell, this novel is written from the perspective of different characters. In the first chapter, we meet Ira. I believe he is in his early hundreds. He spends much of the first few pages talking about the close relationship he had with his father. What I liked most about this particular section was that it showed how human Ira was. He is an elderly man who was shaped by the guidance of his parents and the love of his wife. Of the only part I didn't particularly care for was the appearance of Ira's late wife. It seems to me that Sparks used this premise in his last few novels but I can be certain. One of the things that I enjoyed most about this first chapter was the amount of history that was involved in it. It seemed slightly reminiscent of Nicholas Sparks’ first big novel The Notebook. I didn't get through his last novel so I planned on doing a series of blogs about...
